Where's That Then? No 8

A fairly easy one this week, I should think. Another classic English view, but I'll give a slight hint. That building on the right with the big blank gable end is a pub. And in many Britain In Colour-style photographs it sports the name and slogan of a particularly good local brewer. So a fried egg on your bacon sandwich this morning if you can get that too. And black pepper on it all if you can give the nickname of the church tower.

Stump & Batemans - Boston Lincs

Well done That Diplo. Everyone else still abed I think. And that slogan? 'Good Honest Ales' which is true.

have to get a brief answer in quick to be sure of a win - but - I reckon that could be the Britannia which is deffo a Batemans pub. I went in there for a few sharpners and a game of pool before a friend's wedding in the 80's. fantastic XXX and arrived at the church in time for the brilliant organ voluntary........

That's the one. The Britannia. I went in there one Saturday, had a couple of XXXs and then went and bought a fleece in Milletts.

Well done, Diplo: good church, good beer. I've always thought that Stump is a bit of an odd nickname. The tower has always struck me as rather elegant, not to say diaphanous.

So tall, they say you can see it from places like Stamford, but I've never seen it from there. H.V.Morton threw pennies down from the top of the Stump onto eagerly awaiting Boston urchins I think.

I wonder if Stump might be a bit of fen irony in as much as the tower is actually very tall. I do like towns with tidal centres. This picture very well demonstrates the bowel emptying process - the town's digested waste is flushed, twice daily, into The Wash - along with the used fat from the deep frier in The Britannia kitchen. Dead cats, odours and bad feeling are swept away to be replaced by a freshly charged disposal unit, held in place by the rising tide, in go more chemicals, dead bodies, spent Batemans and chip wrappers and the process repeats itself. Marvelous.

I love that. I shall never stand on the bridge where this view was taken and see Boston in quite the same light again. Or any tidal town for that matter. I love those that are now some way from the sea but still tidal- Wisbech being a classic example.

Fenland irony might be right. My Lincolnshire relatives told me when I first saw the stump that it was so-called because there had originally been a plan to top the tower with a spire, but the builders chickened out and completed it with a lantern instead. But my relatives come from the Wolds not the Fens, so I'd not take their account as gospel.

I love all the stuff about all the town's gubbins being flushed into the Wash.

Trust Wilko to pitch in with 'diaphanous'. One of those words that I thought I knew what it meant, but then this evening realised I didn't. I thought it had something to do with big, billowing skirts on big billowing women (phwoar). So I looked it up and now I know. So another halting step forward in my hedgukation. More learning!

Heya! I just wanted to ask if you ever have any problems with hackers?
My last blog (wordpress) was hacked and I ended up losing several weeks of hard
work due to no back up. Do you have any methods to protect against hackers?
